Description
The client is a Tokyo-based digital content company that wanted to launch an NFT marketplace for Japanese authors. Manga artists, animators, and other creators turn their work into NFTs and sell it directly to fans. Most NFT platforms are built for short images and crypto-native buyers. This platform is built for long-form content, such as full manga volumes delivered as long PDFs and anime or video works, and for people who have never touched a crypto wallet. On the platform, everything is paid in Japanese yen by credit card, and creators receive payouts by bank transfer. The blockchain works in the background to prove ownership and protect the creator's copyright, while users see a familiar e-commerce experience with no MetaMask, no tokens, and no gas fees. We also developed the secondary market so collectors can resell works and creators earn royalties on every resale.
Highlights
No blockchain knowledge needed - users sign up, browse, and pay by credit card in JPY. Wallets and on-chain transactions are handled behind the scenes.
Made for long-form manga and anime - the platform mints and delivers large PDF and video files, with previews so fans can sample a work before buying.
Creator-controlled copyright - each work is certified on-chain. Creators choose whether buyers can download a file; a downloaded NFT is burned so it can't be resold as a copy.
Secondary market with royalties - collectors can resell works on-site, and the original creator automatically receives a share of every resale.
Challenges
1. Making NFTs usable for people who don't use crypto
The platform's audience is Japanese manga and anime fans and the artists who create for them, not crypto traders. Wallets, seed phrases, and token payments were a hard barrier. The client needed buyers to pay the way they already shop online, and creators to be paid in yen, without losing the ownership guarantees that make NFTs valuable.
2. Handling heavy, long-form content as NFTs
A manga volume or an anime episode is far larger than a typical NFT image. Files had to be stored securely, streamed or previewed smoothly, and delivered only to the rightful owner. The platform also had to stop copies from circulating once a work was downloaded, because protecting creators' IP was the reason the platform existed.
3. Designing a fair economy for creators and collectors
Japanese creators wanted to keep control of their copyright and earn from their work over time, not only from the first sale. That meant a secondary market where resales are possible but controlled, and where royalties flow back to the original author automatically. All of this had to fit within Japanese payment and compliance expectations.
Solutions
1. A "Web2 front, Web3 back" architecture
We built a custodial wallet layer that creates and manages a blockchain wallet for each user automatically. Payments run through a credit card gateway in JPY, and creator earnings are settled by bank transfer. On-chain minting and ownership transfers run in the background on TomoChain, chosen for low, predictable transaction costs. Users get ownership they can verify, and the experience feels like an ordinary online store.
2. Secure storage and delivery for large files
We designed a content pipeline for long PDFs and videos. Files are stored off-chain in secure storage, linked to their on-chain NFT, and unlocked only for the verified owner. Preview modes let fans read or watch a sample before buying. For downloadable works, the NFT is burned at the moment of download, so each copy can be sold only once.
3. A marketplace built around creators
We built creator tools for uploading, pricing, and managing works, with a platform fee model the client can configure. For Phase 2, we developed an in-site secondary market with automatic royalty splits, so every resale pays the original author.
Results & Impact
Established creators on board - well-known manga artists, illustrators, an anime studio, and music artists published works on the platform at launch.
Zero crypto friction - 100% of purchases run on credit card in JPY, with no wallet or token needed from users.
Long-term partnership - after Phase 1, the client continued with our team to build the secondary market, royalty system and do system operations/ maintenance.
